James Madison "Jim" Barco, 71 of Flowery Branch passed away Thursday September 10, 2026, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center-Gainesville.
Born in Miami, Florida, on February 11, 1955, Jim grew up with a deep love for the water. His youth was filled with days spent water skiing, taking boats out fishing with friends, and gathering around bonfires on the beach. During his high school years, he worked at Publix-a company that earned a lasting place as his favorite grocery store throughout his life.
Jim earned his undergraduate degree from his beloved Alma Mater, Catawba College, and went on to complete his master's degree at the University of Florida.
Throughout his career, Jim discovered a deep passion for higher education fundraising and dedicated his professional life to supporting academic institutions. Over the years, he served several colleges, including Illinois State University, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), and Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia, where he served as Senior Vice President of Advancement. Among all his professional endeavors, returning to work at Catawba College for eight years was the true highlight of his career, allowing him to give back to the place he so dearly loved.
Outside of his work, Jim found joy in simple pleasures--mowing the lawn, watching good movies, and spending time with those he loved. Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, a loving stepfather, and a proud grandfather who cherished every moment and conversation with his grandchildren.
Jimm was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Elizabeth "Betty" Thomas Barco; his father, James Jackson Barco; and his brother, Thomas Jackson "Tom" Barco.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janie Ellen Barco; his stepdaughter, Kimberly Dawn Slawson, and her husband, Paul; his cherished grandchildren, Hadley Grace Slawson and Paul Fredric Slawson; and his best friend, Bucky Highsmith.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date.
